FEEDING THE FAMILY

Like many others throughout the country, Sophia’s Hearth Family Center is deeply interested in healthy nutrition and the feeding topics that enable parents and caregivers to help children develop healthy life long eating capacities and habits. Throughout the year, we will offer workshops on a variety of related topics.

Beyond Cheerios and Crackers
Tuesday, September 20, 6:30-8:30 pm

For parents struggling with how to prepare nutritious foods for their toddlers and preschoolers. Find out what a healthy plate looks like, and how to present food to your child for optimal acceptance. A positive feeding relationship in the early years can help encourage healthy eating styles in years to come. There will be a cooking demonstration as part of this class.

Picky Eaters
Wednesday, September 28, 6:30-8:30 pm

Does your child try to manipulate you at the table? Are you short-order cooking for each person in the family? Are you worried about your child's growth if he only eats one type of food? Come find a solution, put an end to picky eating habits and make your food preparation time easier. Parents of toddlers and pre-schoolers welcome.

Starting Babies on Solid Foods
Thursday, October 27, 4-5:30 pm

This class is for parents preparing to start their babies on solid foods, and want to have a positive start to nourishing their families. Learn when to introduce solid foods, which foods to offer, and how to feed them to your baby. This class offers hands-on experience with homemade baby food, keeping it nutritious, sanitary, and easy. We will discuss food concerns, including
food allergies. Research has documented that a healthy feeding relationship from the beginning can help avoid childhood obesity in later years. Learn to observe signs in your baby that will develop a feeding relationship that is enjoyable and emotionally satisfying for both parents and child.

Healthy Snacks
Tuesday, November 1, 6:30-8:30 pm

In a healthy diet, children eat five times a day. With very small stomachs those two snacks each day can be an important part of a healthy diet. What constitutes a healthy snack, and how can we keep it simple? If you frequently find yourself offering a bag of pretzels or veggie booty for a snack, come find out about healthier alternatives that are just as easy. What¹s wrong with pretzels and veggie booty for snack everyday? Learn about
it in this class.

Quick and Easy Meals On the Go
Tuesday, December 6, 6:30-8:30 pm

Learn how to avoid mealtime anxiety with tips on quick, easy, and wholesome meals and snacks. There will be a cooking demonstration, as well as time to devise a meal plan of your own with the dietitian¹s help.

All classes presented and led by Stacey London-Oshkello, MS, RD, LD. Stacey is a holistic nutritionist who has studied with Cynthia Lair, author of Feeding the Whole Family, and received her masters of science in nutrition from Bastyr University.
